Background

As scientists, we typically publish long and complex articles in specialized journals. However, to promote our work within our community and to the general public, and to grow our networks, microblogging platforms are invaluable. Twitter/X, once a popular platform, has become highly politicized, commercialized, and sometimes toxic. Additionally, its management can lead to unpredictable effects, including censorship and exclusion of members who do not align with published or obscure guidelines. This has led me to explore alternatives. Frequently mentioned platforms include Bluesky and Mastodon. Mastodon is part of a family of social platforms that can interact with each other, known as the Fediverse. In my research, Mastodon stands out due to its open nature, which also allows for the self-hosting of communities. A key characteristic of federated platforms is that users can export and migrate their data to different instances, including self-hosted ones. Bluesky, unfortunately, has some design defects and, despite a large and growing user base, is less future-proof and community-friendly. I also discovered Lemmy for discussion groups, which I plan to explore further. Therefore, I will now actively use my two Mastodon accounts— https://mstdn.science/@LabABI_Winkler (Laboratory) and https://mstdn.social/@robert_winkler (private)—for microblogging. For longer blogs, I use a self-hosted WriteFreely, which is also federated (<@robert-winkler@writefreely.nube-gran.de>).

Twitter/X (https://x.com/) is the most well-known microblogging platform but suffers from centralization, proprietary algorithms, and high monetization through ads and data selling. Privacy is low, and censorship is moderate but platform-controlled. The community is large but mixed, with toxicity issues. It does not support federation or self-hosting.

Bluesky

Bluesky (https://bsky.app/) is a newer platform built on the AT Protocol. It is not federated and does not support self-hosting. Its algorithm is centralized and opaque, and privacy is moderate. Monetization risk is possible, and the FOSS ecosystem is partial. Language support is English-heavy. Censorship and moderation are moderate and platform-controlled. Outreach is growing, and the community is expanding.

Mastodon

Mastodon (https://joinmastodon.org/) is a federated platform based on ActivityPub, allowing self-hosting and full data export. It offers instance-based algorithm control and high privacy. Monetization risk is low and community-driven. The FOSS ecosystem is strong, and language support is multilingual. Censorship is low and instance-controlled, and moderation is high and community-led. Outreach is moderate and instance-dependent, with a strong community.

Lemmy

Lemmy (https://join-lemmy.org/) is another federated platform based on ActivityPub, designed for discussion groups. It supports self-hosting and full data export, with instance-based algorithm control and high privacy. Monetization risk is low, and the FOSS ecosystem is strong. Language support is multilingual. Censorship and moderation are low and community-led. Outreach is moderate and niche, with a strong community.

WriteFreely

WriteFreely (https://writefreely.org/) is a federated platform focused on long-form blogging with minimalist styling. It supports self-hosting and full data export, with instance-based control and high privacy. Monetization is optional and donation-based. The FOSS ecosystem is strong, and language support is multilingual. Censorship and moderation are low and community-led. Outreach is low due to its niche focus, but the community is strong.

For scientists and FOSS activists seeking open, federated, and community-driven microblogging platforms, Mastodon and WriteFreely emerge as the most robust alternatives to Twitter/X. Mastodon’s federation, self-hosting capabilities, and strong community moderation make it ideal for both professional and personal use. WriteFreely complements Mastodon by offering a federated, long-form blogging platform with similar open-source principles. Bluesky, while growing in popularity, lacks federation and self-hosting, and its opaque algorithms and potential monetization risks make it less suitable for those prioritizing open and decentralized networks. Lemmy is excellent for discussion groups and complements Mastodon well. I invite you to comment, connect, and participate in open federated networks for science.
